Programs
M56/58
In 1995, General Dynamics Robotic Systems was awarded the task of building, manufacturing, supporting, and engineering value-added enhancements for the Army’s first obscuration system upgrade project since the Korean War. The U.S. Army Program Manager Obscuration awarded the M56/58 ten year, $57 million dollar program to GDRS as an urgent requirement.
GDRS developed a multi-spectral, large-area obscuration system that could establish a defensive posture on the battlefield. The intent of an obscuration system is to be used as a force multiplier and to increase Soldier survivability.
The M56 system mounted on a M1097 HMMWV gives commanders maximum flexibility to plan smoke missions. Our M58 portion of the program supplied component kits for the M1059 Smoke Generator Carrier. Both smoke systems are similar and equipped with visual and infrared obscuration. GDRS supplied 617 M56 systems and 163 M58 component kits to our Army customer.
Our M56/58 program celebrated its final roll out on June 27, 2005. The Army’s Glen Gotschall, Quality Assurance Representative, was in attendance to sign off on the final vehicle. GDRS will continue to provide spares and support to our Army customer for the obscuration program.
